Two Wheeler giant Hero Honda has launched new electric bike for Indian road i.e. E Sprint. This will be the first high speed electric two-wheeler in the country, priced at Rs 37,400.

E-Sprint could go up to 65 km in a single charge with a maximum speed of 45 km per hour.

To reduce vehicular pollution in the country, 11 state governments have given VAT relief to this bike.

Maruti will relaunch SX4 with a new 1.6-litre engine which will have a much higher pick-up. It will be expensive than the current top-end Zxi variant, which comes at Rs 7.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Maruti will go for branding Bollywood star John Abraham as the new brand ambassador for the sporty model to arrest falling sales.

It will deliver 165-175 newton metres of power, much higher then the outgoing model and will meet the latest emission norms. When contacted the company spokesman refused to confirm the development. “We do not talk about future launches and product refreshments. However, any product refreshment is an integral part of our marketing strategy to maintain excitement and meet customer’s aspirations.”

SX4 was launched in May 2007 in three manual variants to counter Honda City but could not compete with Honda’s superior technology and brand image. SX4 steered ahead of the City and clocked top sales of over 3,000 cars per month in the first three months of its launch but soon lost speed when Honda launched the third-generation City in November 2008. SX4 sales are now confined to a few hundred units per month.

Honda has sold 37,600 of the new City till August 2009 since its launch (November 2008) while Maruti has sold only 9,763 SX4s in the same period. Despite being cheaper than the City by over a lakh, SX4 trailed by a huge margin last fiscal too, selling only 13,976 cars against City’s 38,200 cars. The new SX4 will have an additional automatic variant, another first for any sedan from Maruti.

Analyst tracking the sector said that by fully loading the new car, Maruti is making another attempt to prove that it can make all kinds of cars. “Maruti Suzuki is a good brand but its Japanese peers Honda and Toyota appeal more to customers when it comes to buying big cars. SX4 performed better than Maruti’s other big car Baleno and initially even overtook City in sales.

However, it failed to maintain the momentum after Honda responded with a new and more powerful Honda City. Probably, Maruti is now looking for answers to challenge the mid-size car segment,” Kapil Arora, partner at Ernst & Young said.

Another top executive of the auto industry said just as Maruti has not been able to establish itself as a big car maker, similarly global car maker Honda has not being able to sell its small car Jazz, which sells less than 1,000 units per month compared with its closest competitor Maruti Swift that sells over 5,000 cars per month.

Infosys Technologies has told its over one lakh employees that they can expect pay hikes and promotions by October, joining India’s top tech companies in lifting wage freezes and signalling rising optimism for the software industry’s growth prospects.

India’s second-largest software exporter has kicked off a performance appraisal process right in the middle of the festival season, saying in an email last week to staff that hikes and promotions will be effective next month.

“Yes, we are giving hikes this October. It will happen across the board,” Infosys group HR head Nandita Gurjar told ET NOW over phone from Poland on Tuesday. She did not say what the extent of the salary increase would be.

India’s largest software company

TCS, third-ranked Wipro, as well as Cognizant and HCL, have already announced a return to salary hikes and their ranks have been joined by smaller rivals such as MphasiS-EDS, Sonata Software and Symphony Services.

Som Mittal, president of software industry grouping Nasscom, said IT services providers have been winning large deals in recent months and investments in new markets are beginning to pay off, driving the revival.“The downturn has been severe but the industry has worked to see that the impact is minimal. They have done well in the first quarter. This is a people-led industry, so lot of companies are selectively rewarding employees who have worked hard,” he observed.

Infosys’ Ms Gurjar said the company decided to skip the promotion cycle in April this year as employee utilisation and billing rates were low. But a sharp rise in utilisation rates since made it decide to reward staff.

While improved demand and natural attrition have pushed up the utilisation rate at Infosys, operating margins are also seen well ahead of its target of 30%. Infosys’ wage bill is estimated at 45-46% of sales, and the company has projected that FY10 revenue will grow by 3.1-4.6% to $4.45-4.52 billion.

Nasscom has projected that the $60-billion IT services industry, which employs about 2.5 million, will grow by just 4-7% this fiscal, hit hard by a recession in its main market, the US.

“The downturn is bottoming out, and we will do a review of the growth target in December. But this 4-7% target also factors in selective promotions and hikes,” Mr Mittal said.

In a normal year, employees in tech firms get pay hikes of 5-15%, but this time companies such as Wipro are being selective about who gets rewarded and restricting pay-raises to only the best performers. MphasiS and Sonata Software, on the other hand, are linking pay hikes to the companies’ performance.

Wellknown astrophysicist, S M Chitre, said water on the Moon found by Chandrayaan-1 could have been deposited by the comets several billion years ago. ‘‘The comets are like water carriers,’’ he told TOI.

Regarding the significance of the discovery, Chitre said that it will have far reaching consequences with regard to the human colonization of the Moon and future rocket launches from the lunar surface. ‘‘The real significance of this mission is that it surveyed the entire moon. Nasa’s Apollo manned missions between 1969 and 1972 did not find any water at all because they surveyed only a bare 25% of the lunar surface,’’ he said.

The US, Russia and China are exploring the possibility of building human habitats on the Moon after 2020. Space experts said that in this race, India cannot lag behind and Isro officials also have not ruled this out.

Pieters said findings from M3 reveal new questions about ‘‘where the water molecules come from and where they may be going’’.

Scientists have for long speculated that water molecules may migrate from nonpolar regions of the Moon to the poles, where they are stored as ice in ultra-frigid pockets of craters that never receive sunlight. If, indeed, the water molecules are mobile, there is then the possibility of getting water to the permanently shadowed craters.

The M3 team found water molecules and hydroxyl at diverse areas of the sunlit region of the Moon’s surface as well as at the Moon’s higher latitudes where it seemed more definitive in presence. The M3 discovery has been confirmed by data from two Nasa spacecrafts — the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) — on the Cassini spacecraft and High-Resolution Infrared Imaging Spectrometer on the EPOXI spacecraft.

The M3 is a joint project of Nasa’s Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Brown University.

Nortel Networks Corp, Toronto telecom-equipment producer sell all the assets of its enterprise-solutions business and more to Avaya Inc. for $900 million cash, with an additional $15 million reserved for an employee-retention program.

Avaya is the closely held Basking Ridge, N.J., enterprise-communications-solutions provider.

Following an auction, Avaya will pay $900m (£544m) in cash to Nortel, and set aside an additional pool of $15m (£9m) for an employee retention programme.

In return, the firm will receive all of the assets of Nortel's global Enterprise Solutions business, as well as the shares of Nortel Government Solutions and DiamondWare.

Dell and Perot Systems have entered a definitive agreement for Dell to acquire Perot Systems in a transaction valued at approximately $3.9 billion. Terms of the agreement were approved yesterday by the boards of directors of both companies.

The acquisition will result in a compelling combination of two iconic information-technology brands. The expanded Dell will be even better positioned for immediate and long-term growth and efficiency driven by:

* Providing a broader range of IT services and solutions and optimizing how they’re delivered;

* Extending the reach of Perot Systems’ capabilities, including in the most dynamic customer segments, around the world, and,

* Supplying leading Dell computer systems to even more Perot Systems customers.

The Round Rock, Texas-based Dell said Monday that it will offer Perot for $30 per share, a 67% premium to the IT firm's Friday closing price of $17.91. The deal is expected to be completed during Dell's fiscal fourth quarter ending in January.

The move marks a strategic shift for Dell, which has stuck with its personal computer and server sales even as its rivals like Hewlett-Packard (HP) and IBM (IBM, Fortune 500) continue to diversify amid slumping hardware sales.
